mystery of the butter cookies...
several weeks ago
a tin of butter cookies appeared on our common table
me and 3 other colleagues are seated such that our backs face one another when we face our computers
and there's a round table in the middle
which we use for heaps of paperwork and lunch gatherings
the cookies were there
and in my office
the culture is such that we share watever food that's available
we set up a mini pantry where all the food everyone contributed is piled up
and whoever that is hungry can just eat watever's available
so..the contents of the cookie tin slowly diminished
and we all simply assume that it was brought by someone in my group
until one fine day someone popped the question
"eh, whose har? these cookies.."
and we started saying each other's names
then it dawned on us that no one brought the cookies
and we went from the "uh-oh" [did we eat someone else's stuff by mistake?] feeling
to "hmm.." [was it a gift from god? ghosts? evil pple planning to poison us?]
to "watever lah..juz eat" [anyway, the tin is half empty aredi]
and so we allowed the matter to rest
until this morning
ANOTHER tin of butter cookies appeared
a few of us started asking ard again
questions and comments flew around..
"eh, from who one har?"
"no i din bring"
"not me oso"
"drop from sky one"
"maybe it's a gift from god"
"y he keep giving us butter cookies?"
"u all very lucky hor, always got free food"
"can eat one anot, scally expire aredi"
"maybe got poison one"
then one of my colleagues [who has been on the phone during all these commotion] said
"orh, no lah, it's from the indian lady in the other room. coz dat time i bought something for her"
with that settled, the mystery of the 1st tin was brought up again
"then mayb the 1st tin was from her also?"
"no lah, dat time dun really know her yet, she give us for wat?"
"so until now, we still dunno who the 1st tin is from hor"
"aiyah, forget it lah, eat so much liao oso nothing happen, anyway, goin to finish soon"
and so, we will not be out of butter cookies for some time
wonder when the 3rd tin will come..
